- Te Ao Māori
- Volcano barnacles have no specific Māori name. They are part of the coastal landscape. Their white bands on black rock are distinctive. Beautiful. Striking. A natural pattern. A design by the sea. Recognisable. Iconic. Enduring.
In 1778 it was described by Molina. Since then it has covered the rocks. The Volcano Barnacle is large. Conical. White or pink. It looks like a miniature volcano. Hence the name. It lives on exposed shores. Where waves crash. Where wind blows. It withstands the pounding. It cements itself to the rock. It does not move. It cannot. It is fixed. Permanent. A statue of the sea.
Habitat is the mid to low intertidal zone. Exposed coasts. Headlands. It forms dense bands. White stripes on dark rock. It is iconic. A symbol of the New Zealand coast. Everywhere you look. On every headland. In every bay.
Diet is plankton. It filters water when submerged. It extends feathery legs. Cirri. They catch food. Sweep. Retract. Eat. Repeat. It trusts the tide. The tide brings life.
Threats are minimal. It is tough. Resistant. It survives drying. It survives cold. It survives heat. Only extreme pollution harms it. Or physical removal. Humans sometimes collect them. But they are too numerous. Too widespread. They persist.
Range is nationwide. Found on both main islands. It prefers exposed waters. Rough seas. High energy environments. It thrives in the chaos. In the crash. In the spray. It is a creature of power. Of force. Of endurance.
Life span is five to ten years. Long for a barnacle. Growth is slow. Steady. It builds its shell layer by layer. Calcium carbonate. Stone by stone. It becomes part of the rock. Indistinguishable. Eternal. Until it dies.
